Horror movies are a kind of craze for director-filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. Since he made good money in 'Phoonk' he ventured into its sequel too. It won't be wrong to say that the first one was about black magic, and the sequel is a mix of more black magic and a little revenge. Incidentally, Ramu gave its directorial reign to Milind Gadagkar, who wrote the first script. Hence, the sequel starts from where the first ended. Alas, the movie fails to scare as it was supposed to. In fact, 'Phoonk 2' may have tried a step forward, but ended with a step backwards. The reason is apparent; Milind tries to create environment but doesn't succeed because of three major flaws.

First, the story isn't cohesive. Two, editing is weak and thirdly, the movement is too slow. In fact, the story doesn't move in the first hour. The post-interval session moves faster and better. But we wonder how, could a slow moving movie, scare the watcher, especially in the midst of too many sequences trying to terrify but ending in vain. According to the story, 'Phoonk' ended with the killing of Madhu played by Ashwini Kalsekar, the woman who casts a black magic spell on Raksha (Ahsaas Channa ), daughter of Sudeep playing Rajiv.

'Phoonk 2' begins with Madhu's ghost taking revenge on the family. Rajiv moves with his family to a new place; Raksha and her brother Rohan look for any place ranging from the lonely beach to the woods. Meanwhile, they come across a doll in the woods and get terrified. Besides, Rajiv who had the only friend in Manja played by Zakir Hussain, is killed by Madhu's ghost. The entire family experiences trauma. Madhu is busy seeking revenge on Rajiv by torturing his loved ones - his wife Aarti played by Amruta Khanvilkar and their children - Raksha and Rohan.

The presence of Rajiv's sister Arushi (Neeru Bajwa) and her husband Ronnie (Amit Sadhis is to give a high dose of sex and romance in the movie. Why else Arushi would say shay around in tank tops and short shorts? However, analyzing the movie critically, we find that the cast has proved its worth.

Sudeep performs his job very well. So does Amruta Khanvilkar., don't get much scope. Ashwini Kalsekar is scarcely present. So are Ganesh Yadav, Zakir Hussain and Jeeva appear. Anu Ansari is average. Incidentally, Lenhert Pereira's photography is very good. The background score is good too.
